What 4DP Actually Measures
4DP breaks cycling fitness into four numbers instead of one, per Wahoo’s own explainer. Most apps give you a single FTP number. Wahoo splits it into four durations. Each one stresses a different energy system.
- Neuromuscular Power (NM): your best 5-second power. Pure sprint force.
- Anaerobic Capacity (AC): your best 1-minute power. The system that burns during a hard attack.
- Maximal Aerobic Power (MAP): your best 5-minute power, a stand-in for VO2max.
- Functional Threshold Power (FTP): your roughly hour-long sustainable power.
Translation: instead of one FTP number, you get a fingerprint of where your power comes from. Sprinter, attacker, diesel engine, or a blend of the three. That’s useful for race tactics.

Inside Wahoo’s Hour-Long 4DP Test
The flagship Full Frontal assessment is one continuous protocol. It runs two 5-second sprints, a 1-minute max effort, a 5-minute max effort, and a final 20-minute max effort. Each effort gets a 5-minute recovery block. The whole thing takes about 60 minutes.
Here’s the twist. Your FTP number comes from 100% of that 20-minute power, not the usual 95%. Wahoo’s logic: by minute 40 you’re already fatigued from the sprint, AC, and MAP efforts. What’s left in the last 20 minutes is closer to true aerobic threshold.
That matters because standard tests disagree with each other more than most riders realize. A 20-minute test and a ramp test can produce FTP numbers 5-10% apart. Two riders who both hit 300W on a 20-minute test might read 330W or 270W on a ramp test. Ramp tests overstate FTP for riders who lean anaerobic. In short: your test protocol can shift training zones by tens of watts, even with identical fitness.
4DP’s multi-effort design exists to correct for that rider-to-rider variance. It’s a smart, well-built test. It’s also a cycling-only test.
Cross-Sport Load: Fitness, Fatigue, and ACWR Explained
Here’s what SYSTM doesn’t give you: a number for how hard your whole week actually was.
AthleteOS runs the same model used across endurance sports. Your fitness score (CTL) is a rolling 42-day average of daily training stress. Your fatigue score (ATL) is the same idea over 7 days. Your form score (TSB) is fitness minus fatigue. It traces back to Banister’s 1975 impulse-response model.
Translation: fitness builds slowly over six weeks. Fatigue spikes and fades in about a week. Form tells you if you’re fresh or buried today. Below -10 usually feels heavy-legged. Between -10 and +10 is normal training. Above +10 usually means you’re tapered and race-ready.
ACWR takes this one step further as an injury-risk signal:
ACWR = 7-day acute training load / 28-day chronic training load
Gabbett’s 2016 paper found injury risk was lowest with ACWR between 0.8 and 1.3. Risk climbed above 1.5. A 2020 review of 27 studies put real numbers on it.
That’s nearly a sevenfold gap in injury odds between the safe zone and the danger zone. Wahoo SYSTM has no ACWR number. Neither does a raw 4DP score.
Why Single-Sport Tools Fall Short for Triathletes
4DP tells you a lot about your bike. It says nothing about whether this week’s run volume is safe on top of that bike load, or whether your swim quietly drained recovery you needed for tomorrow’s brick.
SYSTM added about 120 run workouts and 80 swim workouts. Neither has a baseline test like Full Frontal. Run and swim intensity isn’t personalized off your data. Swim and run sessions don’t auto-sync to a watch.
This isn’t just a missing feature. It’s a real blind spot. A pilot study of age-group triathlon coaches found they acted on a load spike only 25% of the time. Even then, only 5% of swim, 33% of bike, and 9% of run adjustments avoided a repeat spike. Translation: even good coaches miss most warning signs on a chart.
Raw training stress doesn’t travel cleanly across sports either. Swim stress can overstate load, since paddles and pull buoys inflate the number. Its true cost gets underestimated too. Swimming skips the sore-muscle feeling of a hard run but still drains glycogen and spikes cortisol.
